Thiago da Silva Pinheiro, 42, of Cincinnati, took off from Ontario bound for Brazil, but he had a layover in Boston on Tuesday, Sept. 20, the U Attorney's Office said. Customs and Border Protection agents at the airport searched his luggage as part of a standard security check and found his Samsung tablet with child porn that featured kids as young as 2 years old, authorities said.
Silva Pinheiro said he bought the device from a friend and didn't know anything about the pornography on it, MassLive said. But under questioning, Silva Pinheiro admitted that he had downloaded the 2,800 images and videos from a file sharing service, the website reported from court records.
Silva Pinheiro had worked as a teacher when he lived in Brazil, MassLive said.
Federal officials charged him with possession of child pornography, the US Attorney said. Silva Pinheiro faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
